Issue 40(1) Launch

The University of New South Wales Law Journal will launch Issue 40(1) at Allens on 12 April 2017, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. The Issue features a thematic component on ‘Contemporary Professionalism and Regulation’, which explores the ethos, regulation and other integrity mechanisms of professions in a challenging contemporary context. It considers ‘professionalism’ as a scheme for ensuring high standards of competency and ethical responsibility in occupational groups, particularly those in banking and finance, which have suffered from repeated ethical misconduct in recent years. Issue 40(1) also contains a general component addressing a range of topical legal issues. These include: fiduciary liability; regulations concerning deep sea genetic resources; prosecuting sexual violence in International Criminal Law; the interrelation of military and civilian inquiries; privacy implications of facial recognition technology; family law and the protection of Indigenous children; and vocationalism in legal education.

We are delighted to be welcoming the Hon T F Bathurst AC, Chief Justice of New South Wales, to deliver the keynote address. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Chief Justice Bathurst practiced as a solicitor, then a barrister, specialising in corporate law and litigation. He served as President of both the Australian Bar Association (2008–2010) and the New South Wales Bar Association (2009–2011), and was also appointed as a member of the Australian Government’s Takeovers Panel (2006–2011).
